Rush Medical Center has received the highest rating from the Association of Thoracic Surgeons for both coronary artery bypass surgery and lung cancer surgery - a three-star rating. The three-star rating makes the RUSH Heart and Thoracic Surgery Project one of the best projects in the country
The Association of Thoracic Surgeons is committed to measuring and improving the outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery. Its national database uses quality indicators to collect data and calculate scores based on patients' results of cardiac and thoracic surgery
Dr. Michael J. Liptay, Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, said that although most hospitals have received a two-star rating, which means that their project results meet expectations and are similar to the performance of peer institutions, a three-star rating indicates that this is an excellent project with results that exceed expectations
Dr. Michael J. Liptay
Currently, 13 projects have received three-star honors in thoracic surgery, and about one fifth of the projects involved in cardiac surgery receive the highest evaluation every year. RUSH is one of the only medical centers in the country that have received three stars in both projects. Since its establishment in 2018, RUSH Thoracic Surgery has regularly received a three-star rating, which is the first three-star rating of RUSH Cardiac Surgery
The STS database is an important tool for measuring surgical outcomes, but it also helps participating projects understand how they improve patient outcomes. Through professional collaboration, RUSH can improve the treatment effectiveness of patients by adopting holistic treatment methods. The team works together to determine the best treatment plan for each patient
This achievement is one of a series of honors for these RUSH programs. "American News and World Report" rated Rush University Medical Center as the best pulmonary and pulmonary surgery, as well as cardiology and cardiac surgery in the United States
