Team Nursing method
MaineHealth A coordinated system-wide approach to cancer care puts patients at the center of a team of experts. Regardless of location, team members collaborate (in person or via telecommunications) to discuss individual patient cases, utilize evidence-based guidelines that show the best outcomes, and develop recommended treatment plans, which may include care at multiple Maine Health System hospitals .
Treating cancer patients often requires a multidisciplinary approach. It is common for patients to undergo surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Doctors who specialize in the treatment of each type of cancer work alongside other specialists such as pathologists, radiologists, pharmacists, patient navigators, nurse practitioners and dietitians.
Not every house MaineHealth Affiliated hospitals have a full range of expertise. So we bring all our suppliers together into one team. Our providers know that they and their patients can get the quality care they need. Patients may undergo surgery at a hospital where a doctor has specific expertise and then return closer to home for follow-up care, including chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Our goal is to provide the right care in the right location, as close to home as possible.
Patients seeking a second opinion and participating in clinical trials have the option of going to Maine Medical Center or Maine General Medical Center, which is the largest of our six hospitals accredited by the American College of Surgeons Cancer Committee. In all cases, our experts guide patients to the best available care and determine how much care can be provided close to home.
