Catholic Medical Center (CMC) is a not-for-profit acute care hospital and regional health system located in Manchester, New Hampshire, dedicated to providing the highest quality and most advanced health care to patients throughout the state.
CMC is one of New Hampshire's largest health systems with 330 beds and an affiliated medical staff of more than 400 providers and more than 3,000 employees. Serving more than 180,000 patients annually, we provide a variety of health care services in a highly technical and mission-oriented environment. The hospital's history is steeped in religious ties and a commitment to human well-being, constantly evolving to meet and exceed patient expectations.
CMC is home to the nationally renowned New England Heart & Vascular Institute, ranked as one of the top cardiovascular programs in the country. Doctors at the hospital were the first in the state to implant a mechanical heart/left ventricular assist device and the first in New England to implant the WATCMAN to treat atrial fibrillation. CMC was also one of the first hospitals in New Hampshire to enter into a joint venture with an independent medical staff, becoming a partner in the independent Bedford Ambulatory Surgery Center and Imaging Center. CMC's obstetrics department, The Mom's Place, is the first hospital in the country to have a neonatology department based on "mother and child care." CMC's Center for Women's Health and Fertility is a mission-driven regional center providing excellence in obstetric, gynecological and surgical care. The nationally recognized Breast Care Center is the first in the state to use breast angiography and SAVI SCOUT positioning for breast surgery. Through a primary care practice that cares for young children and young-at-hearts and a dedication to community outreach programs, CMC helps build a healthier community every day.
CMC rankings and honors
Catholic Medical Center (CMC) has been named a 2023-2024 Best Hospital by U.S. News & World Report. The rankings help patients and their doctors choose the right hospital for them. CMC ranks second overall in New Hampshire in the 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings. In addition, CMC is rated a high-performing hospital in seven procedures and conditions: cardiac bypass surgery, heart failure, heart disease, pneumonia, prostate cancer surgery, stroke and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Healthgrades recently named the center one of the 50 best hospitals for cardiac surgery in the United States. This achievement reflects CMC's clinical excellence in cardiac surgery and positions CMC's New England Heart and Vascular Institute among the best in the nation. In addition to being named one of the 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery in the United States, CMC has been recognized for:
Won the Healthgrades Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award for two consecutive years (2022-23)
Ranked among the top 10% in the country for cardiac surgery for two consecutive years (2022-23)
2023 Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Five-Star Recipient
Valve surgery five-star winner for two consecutive years (2022-23)
2023 Five-Star Winner for Gastrointestinal Bleeding Treatment
CONVERGENT
CMC is the first hospital in New Hampshire to perform the Convergent procedure, which is designed to treat patients with long-standing atrial fibrillation (AFib). This two-step procedure combines minimally invasive surgery and electrophysiological ablation. In most cases, patients will no longer need medications to control AFib or clotting.
CHAMPION OF
CMC is the first hospital in New England to receive FDA approval to implant the WATCHMANTM device. WATCHMANTM helps reduce the risk of stroke in people with a type of AFib called non-valvular AFib. The device is implanted into the heart through a catheter. It was first considered an alternative treatment for patients who cannot tolerate traditional stroke reduction methods (blood thinners and surgery). The CHAMPION AF study will determine whether the next-generation WATCHMAN FLXTM device is suitable for all patients with non-valvular AFib.
NEWTON OF
The NEwTON AF study is evaluating the novel IntellaNav StablePoint ablation catheter for the treatment of patients with intermittent AFib. During ablation, the catheter uses energy to scar the soft tissue over the heart and interrupt the chaotic electrical signals that cause AFib. StablePoint catheters work with RHYTHMIA HDx mapping software to provide doctors with extensive information about the inside of the heart. As a result, physicians can direct ablation with the most precise and consistent pressure, resulting in a more effective procedure. CMC is the first hospital in the country to enroll patients in the trial and the first in northern New England to use RHYTHMIA mapping software.
shock wave
CMC is honored to be designated as one of three sites in the Northeast and the only one north of Boston to offer a new technology called the Shockwave Coronary IVL System. Shockwave IVL represents a major advance in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). It is a catheter that creates sonic pressure that travels through soft tissue and breaks down calcium buildup in diseased arteries. The same general approach has been shown to be effective in treating kidney stones and gallstones.
In addition to the technologies mentioned above, CMC is also the first in New Hampshire to offer the next-generation Impella 5.5, a small pump that is placed beneath the surface of the skin to aid blood flow in patients with weak hearts after surgery. CMC also recently began offering the MAZE procedure, an ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation that is performed when patients undergo open-heart surgery for another heart condition, usually valve or bypass surgery. It has been proven to be more than 90% effective in restoring normal heart rhythm after surgery. Patients are also participating in the GUIDE-HF trial to examine the use of the CardioMEMS Heart Failure Monitoring System in a broader patient population. CMC is the first hospital in New Hampshire to offer CardioMEMS heart failure treatment.
