McLean Hospital was founded in 1811 as a psychiatrist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Since its inception, the hospital has been a world leader in the treatment of mental disorders and the training of mental health professionals. As the main teaching institution of Harvard Medical School, McLean Hospital has the largest research project in neuroscience and mental disorders in the United States. The hospital's extensive clinical trial projects can provide patients with the opportunity to use these still experimental drugs before they are officially launched.

McLean Hospital has multiple service locations throughout the country, with Belmont, Massachusetts, its main hospital area.
