The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is a private cancer center with a long history and a large scale in the world. The early predecessor was the New York Cancer Hospital, founded by John J. Astor and his wife in 1884, which began to be located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. In 1936, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. donated a piece of land on York Avenue to the hospital. In 1939, the Memorial Hospital was established at this new site. In the 1940s, two former heads of General Motors, Alfred P. Sloan and Charles F. Kettering, established the Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI) near the Memorial Hospital. In 1948, SKI and Memorial Hospital began to cooperate. In 1980, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was officially merged and established. In 2004, the center established Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to provide PhD education in cancer biology.
