The University of Washington Medical Center owns the ownership and management rights of CUMG and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which consists of the University of Washington Medical Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Children's Hospital. The mission of the University of Washington Medical Center is to promote medical progress, provide outstanding primary and professional treatment, and train future doctors, scientists, and other health care experts. The University of Washington Medical Center ranked ninth in the 2005 National Hospital Ranking. The University of Washington Medical Center was invited by Kaijian to visit China for exchange, guidance and training in rehabilitation treatment. Li Xinping, a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, heads the Li Ka shing School of Medicine at Hong Kong University. Researchers at the University of Washington Medical Center, based on research on the brains of severely ill patients, have determined that the near death experience should be caused by violent electrical activity during the brain's dying state (oxygen depletion).

In the 2013-14 National Cancer Specialist Ranking, the University of Washington Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center tied for seventh place. The top six are MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dana Faber/Bregan Cancer Center, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

The University of Washington Medical Center has three living Nobel laureates (a total of five), 35 members of the Medical Research Institute, 32 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 13 researchers from the Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute. The University of Washington has won two of the top three National Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science created by the National Institutes of Health: one is the School of Medicine, and the other is the School of Engineering. The institutions that received funding from NIH (National Institutes of Health) in 2013 are ranked as follows: Harvard, University of Washington Medical Center, and John Hopkins. In 2013, the University of Washington School of Medicine brought in more than $1 billion in research funding. Many biotech companies that have been established and are in their early stages originate from research at the University of Washington School of Medicine, including Zymogenics and ICOS.
